St. Stephen's Basilica

Budapest, Szent István tér 1, 1051

St. Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest is one of the most beautiful, most important church and tourist attractions in Hungary.

In order to build the church, collections were started in the 1810s, but the long and adventurous works were only started on August 14, 1851, and ended in 1905.

József Hild is a Pest electorate and architect in the design of the creator of the cathedral of Esztergom and Eger. He led the work until March 6, 1867 until his death. The city council of Pest commissioned another architect-design masterpiece of the important building to the well-known master of the time, and entrusted several public buildings in the capital city, including the Opera House, Miklós Ybl, who continued to finish but due to his death the interior decoration and the decorative works were already under the direction of József Kauser .

In the history of the Basilica, the date of January 22, 1868 was noteworthy, when Hild had planned to have a walled dome and dome dome due to collapsed construction and material faults. This can be traced back to two reasons. Partially used as a gift for the pillars holding the dome, very mixed grade and hardness materials were used. Partially, the dome dome was built on the inner rim of the arches that held it, causing the pylons and the connecting straps, as well as the flakes (a spherical triangular vaulted element projecting structurally into the polygon over a quadrilateral or polygonal planar domed circle or ellipse floor plan) carried the weight of the dome) its load was half-sided and the structure was caused by a lack of balance of the structure.
The construction was then interrupted for more than a year, then the destruction of the debris and the dismantling of poorly constructed parts lasted until 1871.
To continue the construction, Miklós Ybl made new plans and revised the old ones not only the structure but also the appearance. József Hild replaced his hellenistic form and classical style as Ybl’s neo-Renaissance since 1875, and after his death in 1891, his sketches, according to his idea, continued to work until the 1905 consecration.

The organ of the Basilica with the church was completed in 1905. Its builder was József Angster, a disciple of the famous Auguste Cavaillé-Coll in Paris, so the organ’s sound and sculpture follows French principles. The organ house was made by Endre Thék’s furniture factory. The instrument was expanded several times and its last restoration was in 1982. The organ has a new, modern four-board playground and a new facade, and has added 13 registers, so now it has 93 registers. The number of whistles is 6507, the longest 10 meters, the shortest 6 millimeters. With its colorful sounds and its full, yet soft sound, it is today the biggest and most beautiful instrument of Budapest.
